The property is on for 300,000 but it is in bad condition. Would you recommend offering 260,000?
We do not recommend offering under the asking price. Homes are emotional, and people can take things to heart so you could end up inadvertently offending the vendor. Some vendors are selling properties for family members that may have passed away. There can be a lot of emotions involved and it could hurt their feelings. Even if you're willing to increase your offer, the damage may already be done. A better question to ask the agent would be: “Would they be willing to consider an offer of £260,000 and how do you think the vendor might feel about that?” If it's an official offer, the agent is obligated to put it forward. Making an offer isn't a bad thing, but there is a fine line between getting some money off and aggravating the vendor.
